We all have just 24 hours in a day, 168 hours in a week. There is no getting around that.

Considering that you need to sleep, eat, bathe, and take care of other basic life maintenance tasks, you probably have at most between 12–15 hours in the day in which to work, play, learn, contribute, and connect with others.

Depending on your stage of life, your personal and professional circumstances, and other factors, you may in fact have far fewer hours in the day available to you.
I know many entrepreneurs who are juggling multiple jobs, family obligations, and health conditions that mean they have at most one or two hours to spend working on their business some days.

However many hours you do have in a given day, you want to make the most of them. The key to doing this is to manage your energy.

When you are laser-focused, you can get a lot done in just 15 minutes! However, if you are like most people, you have also had whole days go by when you felt busy but weren’t really getting much done.
Here are some simple strategies you can use to become more aware of your current energy state and to improve it so you can get more done and have more fun!

Check in With Yourself

How do you feel right now? How does your left foot feel? What about the back of your neck? How many things are competing for your attention right at this very moment while you read this blog post?
Just pausing for a moment to check in and see how your energy is — physical, mental, and emotional — gives you a chance to do something about it before you hit burnout.

Just ask yourself: On a scale of 1 to 10, what is my physical energy level? What’s my mental energy level? What is my mood like? You can do this whenever you change tasks or when you start to feel a little sluggish.

On the other hand, set an alarm on your phone or schedule a reminder to yourself a couple of times a day to check your energy level.

Adjust as Needed

These tips for adjusting your energy take just 2–5 minutes.

Are you feeling dull, sluggish, or bored? Then you need to crank up your energy level a bit:

Move your body: stretch, take a short walk, or crank up a song and dance wildly for a few minutes.

Drink a glass of water: slight dehydration can cause mental and physical sluggishness long before you feel thirsty. Try running some cool water over your wrists, too!

Connect with someone: talk with a friend, play with your dog, or send an email to a far away loved one.
Are you feeling overwhelmed, distracted, or stressed? Then you need to calm your energy:

Breathe: set a timer for one minute, close your eyes and just breathe. This resets your nervous system and helps your brain focus.

Write it out: take a pen and a piece of paper and write about whatever is on your mind for 5 minutes. Getting it out of your mind and onto the page helps you figure out what to do next.

Experience nature: step outside and look at the sky, feel the leaves of a plant or tree, and listen to whatever sounds are around you.

Put Your Own Oxygen Mask on First

The airplane safety instructions always say to put your own oxygen mask on first before assisting those around you. That means that if you take care of yourself first you will be better able to take care of the people, projects, and priorities in your life and your business.

Checking your energy levels and adjusting them throughout the day is a simple way of taking care of yourself. Try it and see your productivity soar!
