Every
weekend, you recommit to working more efficiently and getting your
business under control. You sit yourself down, set your goals and
prioritize: get Inbox to zero, sort through receipts and systematize
online marketing efforts. You may even use a fancy note-taking program
like Evernote or Workflow, to feel extra on top of things!
]Fast
forward to Monday morning. You are at your desk — pumped and ready to
conquer. You open your Inbox. Three seconds later, you are greeted by a
tidal wave of black subject lines crashing against the screen. You hold
your breath, start at the top and work your way down to the ones you did
not get to last week.
Two
hours later, exhausted and only halfway through, you decide you deserve
a break. You glance at the shoebox of receipts sitting on your
desk — the next task on your list and handy alternative to going through
your e-mails.
Before
you can pick up the box, your hands take on a mind of their own typing
in the URL for Facebook instead. Several pictures later, you look at the
clock and realize half the day is gone! The task list you were so
excited about making your Goliath now feels painstakingly endless.
Therefore, you give up (sometimes for the day, sometimes for the week).
Do not feel bad, you are not alone — we have ALL been there!
The anxiety when the phone rings (maybe it is someone whose email you never saw).
The uncertainty of how much money is actually coming in.
The contradiction of wanting more clients, while barely meeting current demands.
You
know this is NO way to run a business — so, why don’t you do something
about it? Why do you continue giving into temptations that sidetrack you
KNOWING it does not serve you? Is it lack of self-control? On the other
hand, motivation? Moreover, how can you break the cycle?
The process is, actually, twofold.
Accept that being sidetracked by emotions is perfectly normal.
Humans
are hardwired to experience emotions. According to psychologists, we
have two coexisting brain systems — emotional and rational. The
emotional side is instinctive and is responsible for our feelings. The
rational side is analytical and is responsible for planning situations.
Acknowledgment
of these separate systems can be traced back to Plato and Freud. Our
contemporaries refer to them as the “Doer” and the “Planner,” or as
Jonathan Haidt says in his book The Happiness Hypothesis, the “Elephant”
and the “Rider.”
In Haidt’s hypothesis, the Elephant represents the inert emotional side —
The
Rider represents the rational side — the one that suggests a diet to
begin with, or urges you to do something about the detrimental way of
running a business before its too late. The Rider acts like he is in
charge, but the truth is the Elephant can overrule the Rider whenever he
feels like it.
As a result, we constantly experience an emotional versus rational tug of war.
You
cannot get rid of it! So, stop fighting with your emotional pulls, and
do not beat yourself up over it when you give in! Remember, this is the
same side of the brain that gave you inspiration, motivation and
determination to follow your dreams in the first place.
GET CLEAR: WHY you are doing it, HOW you are going to accomplish it and WHAT will be your milestones
Since
it’s no use fighting your emotional pulls, you’ve got to get them work
FOR you. You do it by getting to the heart of WHY you do what you do.
What is the big dream that will be possible out of your inconveniencing
yourself, pushing yourself to the limit and getting out of your comfort
zone? That clarity will give the Elephant force to your intentions.
Then,
to appeal to your rational side, identify the actions that you are
going to take to get to your goal. List them down and plan them out. The
more accurately you define your steps, the easier it will be for the
Rider in you to stay on track.
Lastly,
recognize the small wins on your way to your big goal. Make sure you
acknowledge yourself when you reach each milestone, no matter how
insignificant it may seem.
Say, you are trying to accomplish a large goal, like getting your Inbox from 1,184 unopened e-mails to zero.
WHY
do you want to do it? To be in control, to have a thriving business, to
be able to bring in more clients, generate more revenue and get
satisfaction that is more personal? Do not stop there — what is YOUR
“why?”
Then
plan your work and identify milestones. This might mean, setting aside
time to open 15 emails every day for 4 months. Alternatively, maybe
taking 15 minutes a day to deal with your backlog. On the other hand,
even sorting e-mails into relevant folders before opening ones worth
your immediate attention.
Structure
it anyway you like, as long as you have a clear pathway to achieve your
goal. AND THEN celebrate your accomplishments — 1month Inbox to Zero
Anniversary; 500 Checked E-mails; 1 Folder Down 3 To Go Happy Hour! (You
see how easy it would be to get an accountability group?)
You CAN do it! Melvin
